I find that more and more I read something and my brain chooses to substitute that word with one that it
1) just miss read
2) fills in the word that most often associated (by this brain) with the previous word(s)
Both 1 and 2 happen regularly when I do crosswords resulting in extra thoughts about the solution. By extra thoughts, I mean off-topic hint meaning cogitation. I see this as harmless and potentially beneficial as it exercises my recall of more possible words and flexibility in deciding the hint's meaning. All good, as I do not time my puzzling activities. Time constraints always degrade both my success and my enjoyment.
And ever more frequently 2 is happening when I read news articles. Here is today's example which struck me like a cold, wet, smack in the face by a just caught fish. Metaphorically.
